King Tides Now – Commoners By 2050

Rising sea levels have major implications for coastal gardens. Yesterday’s king tide gave us the perfect opportunity to see what will be commonplace by 2050. One corner of the world that is experiencing greater than average sea level rises is north eastern Australia.

Even if all greenhouse gas emissions ceased immediately, oceans respond very slowly. As water warms it expands, occupying more space, while melting ice caps and glaciers further add to ocean volumes.

Is Duncan Street’s Nature Strip Now Safe?

Bayside residents have vowed to stop council plans to destroy this nature strip.

Subsequent media coverage by ABC Radio and Channel Ten TV on Tuesday 27th May it now appears that Brisbane City Council are willing to discuss ways to retain and improve this community asset!

Who are these strange red aliens?

It’s sizzling outside. Just enough cloud cover to bathe everything in a white UV glow. It’s certainly humid.

Here’s some local gossip: a gardening friend says a local water diviner told her that in February Brisbane will see rain like it’s never seen rain before. I’m sure that’s reliable testimony. I’ve chocked everything up under the house…

Four more sleeps until the festival of maximum emissions is with us. Santas everywhere. Resistance is futile.

A Blot On The Landscape

In many ways SE Qld is Australia’s garden centre, propagating and supplying landscapers and nurseries throughout SE Australia. Despite this, many good nursery businesses in this region are suffering during the drought. Lost custom and level 5 watering restrictions are putting reputable people out of work, and businesses are closing down.

Imagine you’re a professional nursery grower. You grow good stock and you have a good, established reputation…and you’re managing to do reasonable business. What would be the ultimate turn off for your customers?
