Welcome to Timor-Leste!

Upon arrival at Presidente Nicolau Lombato International Airport you will be greeted by an English- speaking guide before being transferred to your hotel in downtown Dili.

This afternoon we will begin our journey by discovering Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste. During this city tour you will learn about the country’s Portuguese heritage; the Indonesian occupation and what life is now like in this recently independent and peaceful nation.

We will then climb up to the Cristo Rei monument to admire the panoramic views over the city and surrounds before enjoying a sunset dinner and drinks at a beachside restaurant. (D)

DAY 2 – 16 JUNE 2020 DILI

Your morning will be filled with meetings with local and international development agencies who work in the field of sustainable agriculture. Learn about school garden programs; farmers collectives; rice; coffee; coconut oil; boutique spices and other local products.

Over lunch today we will sample some tasty local dishes at an excellent hospitality training restaurant. In the afternoon our group will visit the Alola

Foundation to learn about their women’s health, education and economic empowerment programs. (BLD)

DAY 3 – 17 JUNE 2020 DILI

Today we will travel high into the mountains to visit a vanilla farm in Aileu. Lunch will be eaten at a youth training restaurant where we will learn about their sustainable agricultural programme.

In Maubisse, a town in the hills 70km south of Dili, our group will visit the Green School to learn about their education vision, and in the afternoon we will return to Dili via a coffee farm which is being supported by ex-Australian peace keepers. (BLD)

DAY 4 – 18 JUNE 2020 LIQUICA

Leaving Dili today, our group will travel along the northwest coast and up into the mountains again to visit a coffee processing plant, coffee co-operative and demonstration farm. Whilst there we will also visit a bamboo processing plant. Lunch will be served at an inspirational technical training college before returning to the coast and the laid-back town of Liquica. Here we will gain some further insights into Timor-Leste’s past before relaxing over sundowner drinks and dinner at a beachside resort. (BLD)

DAY 5 – 19 JUNE 2020 BALIBO

Today our journey will take us around the coastline towards the historical fort at Maubara, visiting some very talented local ladies en route who weave traditional baskets.

A lunch of locally-grown produce will be eaten at the Balibo 5 Café – an endeavour which supports a local women’s group – before we visit a women’s NGO in Maliana to acquire some knowledge about their agricultural projects. The evening will be spent at the famous Balibo Fort Hotel. (BLD)

DAY 6 – 20 JUNE 2020 BALIBO

This morning we will be taken on a guided walking tour of the village where five Australian journalists – the Balibo Five – were murdered during the lead-up to the Indonesian invasion of Timor-Leste in October 1975. There will be a minute’s silence as we contemplate their loss and the difficult birth of this young nation.

An optional trek, or drive, to Maliana this afternoon will bring us to the site of another local women’s agricultural project. From here we will travel along a bumpy 18km section of road to the isolated village of Marobo. It is here that we will meet some East Timorese women who weave traditional ‘tais’ cloth – an essential part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

DAY 7 – 21 JUNE 2020 DILI

On the way back to Dili today we will visit the Indonesian border at Batagade and make another stop in Liquica town for lunch and a refreshing dip in the ocean.

After visiting the Aipelo Portuguese prison ruins we will arrive back in Dili in time for dinner at Dilicious Restaurant. More fresh, East Timorese delicacies await us here. (BLD)

Early this morning our group will take a 2-hour boat ride to Atauro Island, keeping an eye out for dolphins as we cross the strait. Here we will visit Empreza Diak – a local non-government organisation which promotes economic development and traditional culture in the region. (BLD)

Today you can take an optional morning boat ride to the other side of the island to visit a local agricultural group. There will be plenty of free time this afternoon for swimming, snorkelling or simply relaxing by the beach. (BLD)

DAY 10 – 24 JUNE 2020 DILI

Following breakfast you will be transferred back to Dili by boat where you will enjoy a scrumptious lunch and afternoon at leisure to explore Dili at your own pace.

For those who are interested, there will be time to book and experience a Balinese massage (approx. USD$25 to USD$35 payable locally). This evening you will enjoy a farewell dinner with your newfound friends. (BLD)
